If you’re a fan of the hit book and Starz series Outlander (and a certain Jamie Fraser in particular), you may be wondering: is LallyBroch real, and where is Lallybroch? Is it a real location in Scotland, or just an Outlander filming location? Well, I’m happy to tell you: you can visit the real LallyBroch! It’s a real 15th-century residence located in Scotland and it’s both easy and relatively inexpensive to visit. Just in time for the Outlander season 7b premiere- keep reading to see the best ways to visit Midhope Castle!
Where is Lallybroch Scotland?
The real Lallybroch castle is located in Abercorn, South Queensferry, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland. Lallybroch’s real name is actually Midhope Castle! If you’re planning a trip to Edinburgh and wondering: how far is Midhope Castle from Edinburgh? You’re in luck- this Outlander filming location is only a 28 minute drive from Edinburgh via car. Warning: the roads leading immediately up to Midhope Castle are winding, narrow, and in some cases, 1 lane only. So be careful when you visit the real Lallybroch!
How to see the real Lallybroch
Since Midhope Castle is now an iconic Outlander filming location, you may be wondering: How to visit Lallybroch. You have options when deciding to go to Lallybroch! You can either tour this Scottish castle yourself, or you can sign up for a tour (which is what my fiance and I did!). We went on an Outlander Film Locations Tour with Viator and we loved it! However, if you want more time to visit Lallybroch in Scotland on your own time, I’d recommend booking your own tickets directly. Fair warning if you visit Midhope Castle on your own; I recommend driving on your own OR if you have a taxi driver, see if they’re able to wait for you. The estate warns that it can be difficult to get a taxi for transportation from Midhope Castle- so just be aware!
Can you go Inside of Lallybroch?
Unfortunately, you cannot go inside of Midhope Castle and see the inside of Lallybroch. The castle is from the 15th century and is now unfortunately derelict on the inside. The inside Lallybroch scenes in Outlander were all filmed in a studio, not Midhope Castle in Scotland. Your ticket includes entry to the grounds of Midhope Castle though- and you can even go up the front steps and to the door!
Where are Other Outlander Filming Locations You can Visit?
I’m glad you asked! Obviously, Outlander Film Locations in Scotland are in abundance, so it’ll be easy to find some gems, but also difficult to plan it all for one trip. As I’ve mentioned previously, my Fiance Logan and I went on an Outlander Film Locations Tour through Viator and we absolutely loved it! Here’s the exact Outlander tour we went on, and you can read more about Viator here; it’s a full review and covers everything about how Viator tours work. In addition to Midhope Castle, we went to Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison), Falkland (1940’s Inverness), Doune Castle (Castle Leoch), and Culross (Cranesmuir).
Conclusion
Lallybroch is a real castle in Scotland and it’s super easy to visit Jamie Fraser’s home in Outlander! Midhope Castle is beautiful and I highly recommend checking it out the next time that you’re visiting Scotland.
