The Best Cincinnati Whiskey Bar: Willow Run Bourbon
If you’re a big bourbon fan, you will love this new and unique Cincinnati whiskey bar in Southern Ohio! Willow Run Bourbon in Cincinnati, Ohio, opened just last year in September of 2024. You can find it located at 645 Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati, close to staples like Nicholson’s Fine Foods and Whiskey and The Aronoff Center. Despite it’s recent opening, Willow Run Bourbon (and whiskey in general) has a long and storied history in southwest Ohio. Keep reading to see why I think Willow Run may be the best Cincinnati whisky bar- and one of your newest favorites.
Cincinnati’s Whiskey History
Did you know that the city of Cincinnati used to be one of the US’s largest producers and distributors of rye whiskey back in the 1800’s? It’s true! By the 19th century, Cincinnati, Ohio, was home to over 100 barrel blenders, creating hundreds of unique whiskey blends right here in the Queen City. Willow Run Distillery was one of Cincinnati’s best whiskey distilleries. It was founded in 1865 by Irish immigrant William J. McRoberts Jr. A survivor of the potato famine, McRoberts became a drayman to make a living. Additionally, William played a role in the Underground Railroad. He actually helped escaped slaves to freedom by sneaking them across the Ohio River in empty bourbon barrels!
Willow Run Custom Bourbon
The original Willow Run eventually closed- but it was recently reimagined when it reopened in 2024, only a short distance away from the original offices. They offer an immersive whiskey tasting experience in which you’ll learn more about the history of Willow Run and William J. McRoberts Jr. as well as the history of Cincinnati whiskey. You’ll also see how Willow Run Bourbon now prides themselves on restoring bourbon to its roots (as it was in the 1800’s) with their custom whiskey blends.
In addition to a full bar, Willow Run Bourbon offer three unique whiskey experiences in Cincinnati:
1. Full Custom Bourbon Blending Experience
This is Willow Run Bourbon’s signature Cincinnati bourbon experience, and the one I booked. You’ll try 6 unique bourbons (and a whiskey smash sample-which is delicious!). As you try each Willow Run bourbon, you’ll hear some interesting facts about crafting a good bourbon flavor (and the types of wood and processes used to create them) and history. Be sure to write down notes on each bourbon as you go, because you’ll need it to craft your own unique bourbon blend. You’ll mix and match the bourbons until you get your own custom blend. The best part? You can order and have it bottled while you’re there! Grab a drink at the bar while you wait (pro-tip: you can try a sample or a full pour of your custom blend). Then name your bourbon. You’ll receive a beautiful bottle of your custom bourbon blend at a reasonable price (I believe ours was around $50). Overall, I highly enjoyed this experience and would definitely do it again!

2. “Flight School” at the Willow Run Teaching Bar
Another experience offered by this Cincinnati whiskey bar is their signature Flight School, where you’ll try a series of their wood series bourbons. These bourbons include Curious Cask, Opulent Oak, and Smoky Stave. You’ll also try 3 seasonal bourbon cocktails inspired by real whiskey cocktail recipes from the 1800’s. This is a shorter experience of 20-30 minutes, and is walk-in only. I haven’t had the opportunity to try it yet, but you know I will eventually! It’s also worth mentioning that the bar has non-whiskey options as well, if that is your preference!
3. Online AI Wizard, Custom Bourbon Recipe Generator
The third whiskey experience offered by Willow Run Bourbon is their AI Wizard Custom Bourbon Recipe Generator. Simply answer 13 questions about your bourbon preferences and you’ll be matched with your custom whiskey blend. From there, you’ll have the opportunity to try a sample at the bar, have a full pour, and order your own custom whiskey blend, of course!
