Afternoon Tea on the Thames: A MUST-do activity in London
One of the most well-known cultural traditions to participate in in London is afternoon tea. A beloved and historical British tradition, afternoon tea is typically something you’d take part in between lunch and dinner. Not to be confused with high tea (typically served at dinner, with a wholesome meal), afternoon tea consists of small finger-sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and small cakes and pastries such as chocolates and macarons.
Since London is the British capitol, there are naturally a ton of choices when it comes to Afternoon Tea. There really is an option for anybody- from more inexpensive options such as Laduree in Covent Garden to high-end Luxury afternoon teas at the Ritz. But did you know that there’s an afternoon tea that allows you to see all of the London skyline… and cruise on the Thames at the same time? That’s right- you can do afternoon tea on the Thames!
City Cruises offers this traditional English experience all from a cruise boat on the River Thames. The experience starts on Tower Hill, where you’ll board your boat with breath-taking views of both the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. Ticket pricing begins around $55 and includes an hour and a half boat ride, your afternoon tea, and a commentary all about London- history, activities, and pop culture. Once boarded, you’ll head to your seat where you can begin taking in the views of London- there are windows all around so that you can enjoy your afternoon tea whilst also enjoying killer views of famous London landmarks. Once the boat ride begins, trays will be delivered to your table with all of the afternoon tea goodies on it- small sandwiches, pastries and cakes, and of course scones with clotted cream. Everything was delicious- although I was not particular to the cucumber and the egg sandwiches (but that’s just a personal preference). They’ll ask you for your choice of tea and will even bring you your own little teapot. I ordered a traditional English Breakfast Tea and I loved it. You’re also able to order other drinks (as well as alcohol if you’d like) from the onboard bar.
Once you finish your tea and snacks you can head upstairs to an open deck and enjoy the breeze from the Thames and better views of the city. This is where you’ll listen to a live commentary all about London- fun facts, history, iconic people, and more. It’s a cool experience as well to venture out underneath the many beautiful and famous bridges spanning London- from Blackfriars Bridge, to Tower Bridge, to the most famous of them all, London Bridge.

The afternoon tea experience lasts for 1.5 hours and ends where you initially board on Tower Hill. While it may be more expensive (and not quite as traditional) as all of the other Afternoon Tea experiences that London has to offer, it is a unique and fun experience that I think is 100% worth it. If you’re looking for things to do in London, I think that this would be a great and traditional activity to try out!
Ever been to London? If so, what is your favorite afternoon tea (and would you go for afternoon tea on the Thames?)
